Betfred Women's Super League Preview | July 30

After the inaugural Women’s Nines competition last Sunday, it is back to Betfred Women’s Super League action this weekend. Here is a look at all the games scheduled to take place.

Two games are set to take place in Group One of the Women’s Super League. The first of which sees a West Yorkshire derby as Huddersfield Giants welcome the Leeds Rhinos on Sunday afternoon with kick-off at 2PM.

The Giants will be searching for their success in this seasons Betfred Women’s Super League Group One. They have struggled this season and have not scored a single point in their last two fixtures; however, they will be hoping the Nines competition will have helped their progression.

Leeds had a fairly successful weekend last week. The Rhinos hosted Wigan Warriors on Thursday evening live on Sky Sports. Georgia Roche showed her quality with two tries and five try assists during the 64-6 success.

On Sunday, the Rhinos took part in the Women’s Nines and were the runners up after losing the final 7-0 to Betfred Women’s Super League leaders, York City Knights.

Leeds sits second in the table with four wins from their five matches and will be looking to close the gap on York on Sunday.

The other fixture in Group One sees St Helens hosting York City Knights. The game will take place on Sunday with kick-off at 2:30PM.

Both sides met last weekend during the nines, with York coming out on top in the semi-finals, however, the St Helens squad featured players from their under 19’s side and many of their England internationals did not take part in the event.

St Helens sit third in the table with two wins and two defeats from their four matches. One of their defeats came against York at the LNER Community Stadium in a tight 13-6 success for the Knights. That defeat was followed by a 20-18 loss to Leeds after a late Fran Goldthrop try, however, St Helens bounced back in their last league fixture when they defeated Huddersfield 62-0.

York City Knights go into Sunday’s fixture off the back of winning the inaugural Women’s Nines. The Knights impressed throughout the day with England stars Tara Stanley, Olivia Wood and Hollie Dodd all playing huge roles in their success. York are the only side in Group One, who have a 100% record. One of the key features for York has been their defence with the North Yorkshire side only conceding 22 points in five matches.

Meanwhile, in Group Two three matches are set to take place, including one which will be shown live on Our League.

On Sunday, Barrow Raiders will take on Featherstone Rovers live on Our League. The game will take place at 11:30am at Headingley Stadium and will get day two of the Summer Bash underway.

Barrow have looked strong so far this season, after losing their opening game to Warrington Wolves, the Raiders have bounced back by winning all of their six fixtures since the opening round. In recent matches, Barrow have been clinical in attack as they have scored 46 points in three of their last four matches. The Cumbrian side sit second in the Betfred Women’s Super League Group Two.

Featherstone sit one place behind Barrow and occupy third place in the league table. Rovers have won five of their seven league matches, with their defeats coming against Warrington Wolves and Leigh Miners. In their last fixture, Featherstone defeated local rivals Castleford Tigers 38-4 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Elsewhere in Group Two Leigh Miners welcome Castleford Tigers. The fixture at Twist Lane is set to kick-off at 2PM on Sunday afternoon.

Leigh go into the fixture in fifth place with two wins so far this season. They defeated Wakefield in the opening game of the season, and then two weeks ago in their last fixture they defeated third place Featherstone Rovers. Leigh will be looking for their first consecutive wins of the season.

Castleford Tigers will travel to Leigh in search of their first success of the season. The Tigers came close to their first win of the season when they travelled to Wakefield. They trailed 8-0 before scoring a try to make it an entertaining last 10 minutes, however they were unable to score another to get their first win of the season.

The final fixture in Group Two sees Wakefield Trinity host the Warrington Wolves. The game will take place at the Be Well Support Stadium on Sunday afternoon and kick-off is at 2PM.

Wakefield will go into Sunday’s match with the unwanted tag of conceding the most points in the league, however they do not sit bottom of the table as they defeated Castleford Tigers at the start of the month. Since then, Trinity have been unable to kick on, with only two tries scored in two matches and over 100 points conceded. Sunday’s match will be a big ask for the West Yorkshire side.

Warrington Wolves continued their red-hot form as they defeated Bradford Bulls last Sunday. Lee Westwood’s side made it five consecutive matches without conceding a point, meanwhile they continued their strong attack. The Wolves have the best attack in the league with 352 scored in six matches.

This will be the second league meeting between the two sides this season. The sides met in May at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium and the Wolves ran out dominant 86-0 victors on that afternoon.

In the Betfred Women’s South Group, two games are scheduled for the weekend.

On Saturday at 2:00 PM it is a clash between the two unbeaten sides in the division when Cardiff Demons host the London Broncos.

The Demons have not conceded a point in their last three fixtures and sit on top of the table due to points difference. In attack, they have scored 280 points in just four matches which gives them a very impressive 70 points scored per game average.

London Broncos may have conceded more points than the Demons and scored less, however they have won all four of their fixtures. Their most notable success was a massive 104-0 home victory against Oxford Cavaliers.

The other game in the South Group sees Golden Ferns host Army RL.

Golden Ferns sit fifth in the table with one win from four matches. That win came in their last fixture as they narrowly defeated Oxford Cavaliers 18-16. Two of their defeats have come against the top two sides.

Army sit third in the table with two wins from four matches. The Army lost their first two matches against the top two sides; however, they have won their last two fixtures and will be looking for a third successive victory.
