Betfred League One Preview | Round 14

Betfred League One Preview | Round 14

Round 14 of Betfred League one takes place this weekend with three of the five fixtures being played on Saturday afternoon, including Cornwall, who host Doncaster at 1 PM live on Our League.

Cornwall welcome in-form Doncaster to the Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The hosts recorded their first ever Betfred League One success in Round 12. Harry Aaronson and Liam Whitton both crossed for braces in the 24-4 away victory against West Wales Raiders.

In their last fixture, Cornwall gave Hunslet an early scare. Aaron Jones-Bishop and Tom Ashton gave Cornwall a lead inside the opening quarter, Hunslet fought back to lead at the break, however Liam Whitton levelled the scores just after the break. Hunslet dominated much of the second half and three second half tries to come away with a 36-24 win.

Doncaster come into Saturday’s clash in a rich vein of form. Richard Horne’s side have won their last three matches, which have included a 36-6 home success over Hunslet, as well as back-to-back away successes against third place North Wales Crusaders and second place Swinton Lions. The upturn in form sees The Dons move up to fifth place, however, they are only two points behind second place, Swinton Lions. In the only meeting between the two sides, Doncaster were victorious in Round 4 with a 52-16 success at the Eco-Power Stadium.

The second game on Saturday sees the London Skolars welcoming Keighley Cougars to the New River Stadium. Skolars started the season slowly with defeats in their first seven Betfred League One fixtures. However, Joe Mbu’s side have since picked up recording three consecutive wins against Oldham, Cornwall, and West Wales Raiders. In their last two fixtures, London have failed to win, but they have faced North Wales Crusaders and Swinton Lions, who both sit inside the top four of League One.

Keighley Cougars are the side who make the trip to the New River Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Rhys Lovegrove’s side have been very impressive so far this season and are the only side in professional rugby league, who still have a 100% record this season. The Cougars have won all 12 Betfred League One fixtures and have been excellent in both attack and defence. Keighley have conceded 90 points in their 12 matches and in attack have scored 579 points, which is an average of 48.25 points per game. Keighley have scored 56 or more points in their last four matches. League One top scorer, Mo Agoro has scored 22 tries this season, including at least one try in his last 10 matches, which is a new club record.

The final game of Saturday sees Midlands Hurricanes host the North Wales Crusaders. The game will kick-off at Portaway at 5:30 PM on Saturday.

Midlands although defeated last weekend, they gave a valiant effort and fought well in the second half during the 42-34 home defeat to Rochdale Hornets. The Hurricanes have three victories from 11 matches, however that does not give a true reflection on how their season has been. In the previous meeting between the two sides, Hurricanes were defeated by only four points in Round Five. Midlands’ last success was in Round 10 when they defeated West Wales Raiders 56-12 at Portway.

North Wales started the 2022 Betfred League One season in impressive fashion winning their opening eight fixtures. However, Anthony Murray’s side suffered three defeats in a row which were against Keighley, Hunslet and Doncaster. In their last fixture, Crusaders defeated London Skolars 30-16 at the Zip World Stadium. North Wales will be confident  doing into Saturday’s fixture with the Welsh side winning the last seven meetings. Tommy Johnson has scored in the previous three meetings between the sides.

On Sunday, Hunslet host West Wales Raiders at the South Leeds Stadium. Kick-off is at 3:00 PM.

Hunslet have won three of their last five fixtures, including last weekend when they defeated Cornwall 36-24. The West Yorkshire side sit sixth in the table and have six wins and a draw, so far this season. Hunslet have won all eight previous meetings against the Raiders, of which they have scored 50 or more points in four of their last five meetings against the side based in Llanelli. The two sides met in Round 9 with Wayne Rettie scoring a hat-trick in the 50-12 victory at Stebonheath Park.

West Wales currently occupy the bottom position in Betfred League One going into Sunday’s fixture. The Raiders have won only one of their 12 League One fixtures.   Their only victory came in Round 8 where they defeated Cornwall 20-0 at the Memorial Stadium. The Welsh said have failed to score more than one try in their last two fixtures.

The final fixture in Round 14 of Betfred League One sees Oldham welcome Rochdale Hornets to the Vestacare Stadium, kick-off will be at 3:00 PM.

Oldham go into Sunday’s match searching for their first home victory over Rochdale since their 38-18 success on 12 July 2015. So far this season, Oldham have won three of their 11 fixtures, which puts them into seventh position in the table. Oldham’s last victory came in Round 11 in a 66-0 hammering of Midlands Hurricanes; however, Oldham were brought back down to Earth in their last fixture with a 62-0 defeat away at the league leaders, Keighley Cougars. Emmerson Whittel is one appearance away from reach 100 career appearances, he has currently made 36 appearances during two stints at the club.

Rochdale will be looking to complete a double against Oldham on Sunday. The two sides met in Round 4, with the Hornets coming out as 34-18 victors.  Rochdale come into the fixture off the back of three victories in four games, with their only defeat coming away at Heywood Park against second place Swinton Lions. If Rochdale are to succeed on Sunday and results go their way over the weekend, Matt Calland’s side would move up to second place in Betfred League One. The Hornets have won three of the last four meetings in all competitions between the two sides.
